Natural Goniatite Fossils – Ancient Marine Treasures

Travel hundreds of millions of years back in time with these fascinating natural Goniatite fossils. Goniatites were extinct marine animals belonging to an early group of ammonoids and are distant relatives of modern-day squids, octopuses and nautiluses.

They lived in ancient oceans from approximately 390 million years ago, during the Middle Devonian Period, until the end of the Permian Period around 250 million years ago.

History & Timeline

• First appeared: Middle Devonian Period – approximately 390 million years ago

• Flourished: Carboniferous and Permian periods

• Extinction: Disappeared during the Permian–Triassic mass extinction approximately 250 million years ago

• Family: An early group of ammonoids, related to the later ammonites

Their Fascinating Shells

Goniatites lived within beautiful coiled, chambered shells. The animal occupied the largest outer chamber, while the smaller internal chambers helped regulate buoyancy as it moved through the ancient oceans.

One of their distinguishing features is their suture pattern – the lines created where the internal chamber walls met the outer shell. Goniatites generally have comparatively simple wavy or zigzag-shaped sutures.

Most Goniatite species were relatively small, commonly measuring approximately 5–15cm across, although size varied between species.

Choose Your Own Fossil

Each available Goniatite is individually photographed and listed so you can select the exact fossil that speaks to you. Prices vary according to the individual specimen.

As genuine fossils, each piece naturally varies in size, colour, pattern, shape and preservation. These differences are part of what makes every fossil a unique piece of Earth's ancient history.
