Natural Ammonite Fossils – Ancient Marine Treasures
Discover a genuine piece of prehistoric history with our beautiful natural Ammonite fossils. Ammonites were marine molluscs with distinctive coiled, chambered shells and are relatives of modern-day octopuses, squids and nautiluses.
Ammonites first appeared approximately 400 million years ago and survived for hundreds of millions of years before becoming extinct around 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period.
Fascinating Ammonite Features
• Coiled shells: Their beautiful spiral shells were divided into a series of internal chambers.
• Buoyancy: A tube called the siphuncle helped regulate gas and fluid within the chambers, allowing the animal to control its buoyancy.
• Living chamber: The animal occupied the largest outer chamber of its shell.
• Fossil history: Ammonites are important index fossils and have helped scientists date and identify ancient rock layers.
Choose Your Own Ammonite
