Caring for Your Natural Crystal Treasures

Natural crystals can last for generations when cared for appropriately, but an important thing to remember is:

Not every crystal should be treated in the same way.

Some minerals tolerate water well, while others are soft, porous, soluble or contain materials that make water unsuitable. Some crystals can also fade after prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.

So before using water, sunlight, salt or another physical cleansing method, it is important to know what your crystal actually is.

What Does Crystal Cleansing Mean?

Within spiritual and crystal traditions, "cleansing" refers to practices believed to clear or refresh the energetic qualities associated with a crystal.

This is different from physically cleaning dirt or dust from the stone.

Crystal cleansing is a spiritual practice and personal belief, rather than a scientifically established requirement for crystals.

Sound Cleansing

Sound is one of my favourite options because it doesn't require putting anything directly onto the crystal.

Singing bowls, bells and other sound or frequency instruments are traditionally used by some practitioners as part of spiritual cleansing practices.

This can be particularly useful when you have several different minerals and don't want to risk exposing a delicate specimen to water.

Moonlight

Placing crystals somewhere they can experience moonlight is another popular tradition.

Many crystal enthusiasts particularly enjoy doing this around the full moon as part of their spiritual practice.

Always make sure your crystals are placed somewhere secure where they cannot fall, become wet or be damaged.

Selenite

Selenite is commonly used within crystal traditions for cleansing and charging other stones.

However, selenite itself is a soft form of gypsum and should be kept away from water.

Be Careful With Water

This is especially important.

Although some crystals can tolerate brief contact with clean water, water is not suitable for every mineral.

Soft or water-sensitive minerals can become damaged, and some specimens may contain components or treatments that make soaking inappropriate.

When you're uncertain, the safest option is to keep the crystal dry.

Be Careful With Sunlight

Sunlight is another traditional charging method, but prolonged strong sunlight can fade the colour of some minerals.

Amethyst is a well-known example.

If you aren't sure whether your crystal is light-sensitive, choose a gentler method rather than leaving it in direct sunlight.

Physical Cleaning

For ordinary dust, a clean, soft, dry cloth or very soft brush is often a sensible starting point.

More valuable, fragile or unusual mineral specimens may require specialist care.

Enjoy Your Crystals Your Way

There is no requirement to cleanse or charge a crystal in order to appreciate it.

Some people enjoy crystals entirely for their geology and natural beauty, while others incorporate them into meditation, spiritual practices, intention setting or personal rituals.

Both approaches can exist side by side.

The most important thing is to enjoy your natural treasures while caring for them appropriately so their beauty can be appreciated for many years to come.
