Choosing Your Crystal

One of the questions I am asked most often at Earth Treasures NZ is:

“How do I know which crystal is right for me?”

With so many beautiful colours, shapes, minerals and formations available, choosing can seem overwhelming. The wonderful thing is that there doesn't have to be one single "correct" answer.

Sometimes the perfect crystal is simply the one that catches your attention.

Start With What You Are Drawn To

When looking at a collection of crystals, notice which one you keep returning to.

Perhaps you're fascinated by the deep purple of an Amethyst, the gentle pink of Rose Quartz, the sparkle of a druzy formation or the incredible natural patterns within an Agate.

In crystal traditions, many people believe we can be intuitively drawn towards particular stones. Whether you approach crystals spiritually or simply appreciate their natural beauty, allowing yourself to choose what genuinely appeals to you is a wonderful place to begin.

Choose by Traditional Crystal Meaning

Another option is to explore the traditional meanings associated with different crystals.

For example, Rose Quartz is traditionally associated with love and compassion, Amethyst with peace and spiritual awareness, Clear Quartz with clarity and intention, and Tiger's Eye with courage and confidence.

These associations come from crystal traditions and spiritual practices rather than established scientific or medical evidence, but many people enjoy incorporating them into their personal spiritual journey.

Choose by Colour

Colour can also be a beautiful way to select a crystal.

You may naturally gravitate towards calming blues, earthy greens, passionate reds, spiritual purples or gentle pinks.

Sometimes your favourite colour leads you directly to a crystal you adore.

Birthstones and Zodiac Crystals

Birth month and zodiac crystal traditions provide another meaningful way of choosing.

A birthstone can make your crystal feel particularly personal and is also a lovely idea when selecting a gift.

Don't Forget the Crystal's Shape

You may discover that you're attracted not only to a particular mineral but also to a particular shape.

Spheres, towers, hearts, moons, freeforms, carvings, clusters, raw specimens and polished stones each provide a completely different way to appreciate the natural material.

Trust Your Choice

You don't need to know everything about crystals before choosing one.

Sometimes you see a crystal and simply think:

“That's the one.”
